Walking Well: Restoring Hip Function (Guided Support Series)

A 4 week guided programme to help you walk with less pain, less stiffness, and more confidence.

Walking shouldn’t be something you have to manage.

Walking Well is a 4-week guided programme that takes you through the key parts of the walking cycle, so you can spot what is missing, understand how the whole body works together, and know which pieces will make the biggest difference fastest.

If you know your walking feels off, and you’re ready to stop guessing and start changing the pattern behind it, this is the next step.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF WALKING NO LONGER FEELS NATURAL

    • Your knees, lower back, or feet complain after walking

  • Your legs feel tight, heavy, or tired far too quickly

  • Walking is becoming something you have to think about instead of something that just happens

  • You limit how far you walk because you know you’ll pay for it later

  • Walks with friends or family are shaped by what your body will tolerate

  • You worry less about the walk itself and more about how you’ll feel the next day

Walking should support your life, not make you plan around pain, stiffness, or recovery time.

THIS IS NOT A WORKOUT. IT’S A WAY OF UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOUR WALKING HAS BEEN MISSING.

Most people are given stretches, strengthening exercises, or generic advice and are left to hope something clicks.

But walking is a whole-body pattern.

If one part of the gait cycle is missing, another part of the body has to compensate — and that is when knees start overworking, the lower back gets dragged in, the legs feel tired, and the feet begin to suffer too.

In this programme, I guide you through the different parts of the walking cycle step by step, so you can:

    • understand how the whole pattern fits together
    • see which parts are missing in your body
    • know what to work on first for the quickest change
    • build a toolkit you can come back to for life whenever things start slipping again

THIS IS NOT JUST A VIDEO COURSE

You won’t be left alone with a set of recordings and told to get on with it.

Each week, you’ll go through the lesson content first, then join me live for a full hour on Zoom to ask questions, refine what you’re doing, and get help making it work for your body.

That means you get:

• clear teaching you can revisit
• live support each week
• help adapting movements if needed
• guidance on what will make the biggest difference fastest

So instead of guessing, you get to learn, check, refine, and improve as you go.

That is often the difference between doing exercises and actually changing something.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

    • 4 short pre-recorded lessons to teach you each key part of the walking cycle
    • 4 live 1-hour Zoom sessions with me to ask questions and refine the work
    • Replay access in case you can’t attend live or want to revisit the teaching
    • 1 year’s access to the lesson materials
    • Video feedback option so you can get extra help with your own walking pattern

WHY NOTHING ELSE SEEMS TO LAST

Most people are told to stretch the sore bit or strengthen the weak bit.

But if the real problem is the way you are walking, that usually only gives temporary relief.

    • You may feel better for a day.
    • Then the ache comes back.
    • The tightness returns.
    •  And the same side keeps taking over.

That is because the body is brilliant at compensating.

If the pelvis is not moving well in walking, something else will step in to help. Usually that means the lower back, hip flexors, knees, or feet end up doing extra work they were never meant to do.

This programme helps you get underneath that.

Rather than chasing symptoms, we work on restoring the missing pieces of movement that allow the whole body to organise itself better in walking.

That is when things often start to feel lighter, smoother, and less effortful.

WHAT WE WILL WORK ON OVER THE 4 WEEKS

Each week, we focus on one of the key movements that should be present in a healthy walking pattern.

These are often the missing pieces behind stiffness, asymmetry, lower back overuse, hip tension, tired legs, and that feeling that one side just never quite works properly.

Week 1 – Rotation  We begin with rotation — one of the most important and most commonly missing movements in walking.  This helps the body transfer weight more effectively, improves stride, and reduces the tendency to overwork the lower back and hips.

Week 2 – Forward and Back Movement  This is the movement that allows one side of the pelvis to come forward while the other moves back.  It helps create a smoother stride and better push-off, and is often missing in people who feel tight through the front of the hips or stuck in the lower back.

Week 3 – Side Shift  Here we work on the side-to-side movement of the pelvis.  This is a key part of weight transfer and helps the torso move over the standing leg properly rather than collapsing, swaying, or gripping.

Week 4 – Hike and Drop  This final piece helps the body deal with bending and straightening through the legs in walking.

It plays a big role in stride length, load transfer, and preventing the knees or lower back from doing more than their fair share.  By the end of the 4 weeks, you will have a much clearer understanding of what your body has been missing — and what to do to keep improving it.

WHY THIS MATTERS

When walking is not working well, the effects rarely stay in one place.

What starts as a stiff hip can become a grumbly knee.
A lower back ache.
A foot that never rolls through properly.
A body that starts bracing rather than moving.

And over time, people begin doing less because it just doesn’t feel worth the discomfort.

This work matters because walking is not just exercise.

It is how you move through your day.
How you stay independent.
How you keep confidence in your body.

When you improve the way you walk, you improve far more than walking.

WHO THIS IS FOR

This programme is for you if you are ready to understand your body better and make meaningful changes over 4 weeks.

You do not need to be fit or flexible.

You do not need to have all the answers already.

You just need to be willing to pay attention, practise, ask questions, and approach your walking in a different way.

Not for temporary relief — for changing the pattern that keeps bringing it back.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I can’t attend live?

That’s absolutely fine, all live sessions will be recorded, so you can catch up in your own time and still work through the material. That said, coming live gives you the chance to ask questions, get things clarified, and refine what you’re doing with my support.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No, this is not a fitness challenge, and you do not need to be “good at exercise” to benefit. The programme is about understanding your walking pattern and improving how your body works together, not pushing through hard workouts.

What if I’ve had these problems for years?

That is exactly why this work can be so helpful.  Many people have been given stretches, exercises, or general advice for years without ever understanding the movement pattern underneath the problem.
This programme helps you look at the bigger picture, so you can stop guessing and start working on the pieces that matter most.

Is this just for hip pain?

No, although the pelvis is a big part of what we work on, this programme is also highly relevant if walking affects your knees, lower back, legs, or feet. Because walking is a whole-body pattern, one missing piece can create problems elsewhere.

Is this just a set of videos?

No. You will get short recorded lessons to support your learning, but this is not a course where you are left alone to work it all out by yourself. Each week, you’ll also join me live on Zoom for a full hour, where you can ask questions, refine movements, and get help making the work fit your body. That guided support is a big part of what makes this programme so effective.

What if a movement doesn’t feel right for me? That is exactly why the live element matters. If something doesn’t feel clear, doesn’t suit your body, or doesn’t seem to be helping, we can refine it and look at other options. You won’t be left trying to force something that isn’t working.

Will I know what to keep working on after the 4 weeks?

Yes. One of the biggest aims of this programme is to help you understand how the walking pattern fits together, what your own body tends to miss, and which pieces make the biggest difference for you. So rather than finishing with a few random exercises, you leave with a toolkit you can return to whenever needed.

How long will I have access to the materials?

You’ll have 1 year’s access to the pre-recorded lesson materials, plus replays of the live sessions, so you can revisit the work and come back to it when needed.

Is this suitable if walking has started to affect what I do socially?

Yes — very much so. This programme is for people who are finding that walking is no longer something they can take for granted. If you’re thinking twice about walks with friends, days out, holidays, or how you’ll feel the next day, this work is designed to help you understand why that is happening and what to do about it.

I had clicking in the top of my arms when I realised I was not letting my arms go backwards. It felt like I had not used that range of motion. A real eye opener for me. I could see how it helped my hips rotate much easier.

A lightbulb moment…major tilting going on must be the reason for my back really aching and feeling “locked” after going on long walks! Now walking does'nt bother my back anymore

L Hartzhorne
After struggling with hip pain that stopped me enjoying long walks, Walking Well  has made a difference. My hip movement and flexibility have improved, and  I understand far better how my whole body affects my hips.

I’m now walking with confidence again, planning two 80+ mile walks this year — and I’ve even been able to return to cricket.”
